“Not Guilty: Got a Mental Alibi”

It’s been five months since US Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head by a crazed gunman. Today after months of intense therapy she was released from the hospital, but will have a twenty four hour care provider and must return to the hospital daily where she will continue to receive physical and occupational therapy with the same team that has treated her since late January. Whether she will ever recover enough to resume her congressional duties is still uncertain, all because of one crazy a-hole with a gun. Jared Lee Loughner.

Loughner joins a long list of three named infamous killers and assassins. John Wilkes Booth, John Wesley Harding, Lee Harvey Oswald, James Earl Ray, Mark David Chapman and John Wayne Gacy to name a few. In fact nine of the top 20 serial killers in the United States are known by three names. So what gives? Why is it that there are so many three-named killers. Perhaps would be assassins use their middle names to embellish their own names to sound more grandiose. In the 19th century middle names used to be a point of pride in the United States. Or could it all be a kind of feedback loop: modern killers wanting to emulate their early three named killer role-models.

Jared Lee Loughner, is one sick dude, a mental misfit who believed that women should not hold positions of power. He had exhibited a longstanding dislike for Giffords, and called her a fake. The few friends he had said he is an atheist and believes that life has no  objective meaning or purpose. He is also an avid believer in several conspiracy theories and thinks the government is using mind control on its citizens. He believes that most people in the country are brainwashed and are unaware that nothing is real. Nothing is real?

So while Gabby goes through exhaustive therapy on her long road to recovery, this idiot sits in the psychiatric wing of the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners buzzing on anti psychotics receiving treatment. Yet another killer with a ‘mental alibi’ for the evil he has done. I mean this guy killed six people including a U.S. Rep, a federal judge, and a child for God sakes! And he injured thirteen other people as well!  Yet like other mental misfits before him he will be found not guilty because of his mental condition. If his mental defense stands he will be placed in a mental facility for the remainder of his life.

It’s often said that justice is blind, well sometimes, justice is deaf and dumb as well. Loughner  will wind up spending his days happily medicated, getting therapy. His counterpart John Hickley, would be assassin of Ronald Reagan back in 1981, was found not guilty by reason of insanity. In an interview a few years after his committment he told reporters he spent his days “seeing a therapist, answering mail, playing guitar, listening to music, playing pool, watching television, eating lousy food and taking delicious medication.” Does that sounds, like a fitting punishishment to you? I don’t think so.

In 1981 Mark David Chapman brutally murdered John Lennon and was found mentally competent to stand trial. Although he lied in wait for Lennon and planned to kill him, he was only found guilty of second degree murder and sentenced to twenty years to life. Thankfully, thirty years later he remains in prison where he works as a legal clerk and kitchen helper. He spends much of his time reading and writing short stories. If you ask me that’s not a fitting punishment for a murderer.

Justice?

Killers like Chapman, Ray, Manson, Ramirez, and a slew of others should be on a chain gang somewhere busting rock in the hot sun, from sun up to sunset. They should have no priveleges, they should spend the rest of their day sitting in their cells, thinking or twiddling their thumbs or whatever! No TV, music, no reading or writing! Nothing! Their only privelege should be that they are allowed to live. I know the Civil Liberties Union would be all over that saying that it’s cruel and unusual punishment. But so what! What these killers did was cruel and unusual in and of itself and they deserve the same!

Justice for Loughner?

Now, I’ve never been a proponent of capital punishment, but in some of these cases, including Loughner’s, I believe I could be swayed in that direction. It’s time for America to wake up and stop pampering criminals. Committing murder has serious consequences. It’s time to recognize that although everyone is created equal, they don’t remain that way. Those that respect the laws of God and man should be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. Those that break those laws should be punished accordingly, the punishment should fit the crime no matter how harsh. The CLU be damned!

Just saying!
