It’s my lunch time, but I have no appetite, instead I sit here writing, trying to figure out just what the hell is going on in this country of ours? Have we really regressed to the point where even elementary school children are no longer safe in their own classrooms? Granted, it is a pretty crazy world out there but is society really so overrun with mental misfits, lunatics and freaks that even children as young as 5 become the target of their delusions? Sadly, after what happened today at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, I can only surmise that the answer is a resounding yes.
Today’s tragedy is yet another in a long list of recent school related mass killings, but this is the first time that I can recall anything of this magnitude occurring at an elementary school. Of the 27 people killed in the massacre, there were 20 young children,18 who died at the scene and 2 who died later at the hospital, 6 adults and the shooter who took his own life. Also among the dead were the shooter’s mother who once worked as a teachers aide at the school who was found shot dead at her home. Many of the young children killed were said to have been first grade students.
I tell you, I just can’t wrap my mind around it. I mean what kind of monster walks into an elementary school armed to the teeth after already killing his mother at home by shooting her in the face with her own gun? Then drives to her former workplace and guns down a host of young children as well? My immediate thought is a ‘sick’ monster, but even being sick in the head does not excuse what went down today. Anyone that sick should not be walking the streets or have access to weapons. What does this say about our system for dealing with mentally ill individuals? Not much I’m afraid.
There are countless mentally ill individuals on the streets today who are not being treated or take no medication for their conditions. It’s been reported that the killer may have been mildly autistic and had difficulty forming relationships or making friends. His mother who was said to be a gun advocate and loved going shooting with her children actually taught the killer how to shoot. As a teacher’s aide perhaps she should have known better and focused her attention on working to develop his social skills rather than his shooting skills, skills he ultimately used to kill her, 6 adults and 2o young children. The taking of any life is insufferable, but killing innocent children is horrific. This killer was a monster.
My heart goes out to the parents who’s children lost their lives at Sandy Hook today and their families. It goes out to the families of the principal, counselor and teachers who were killed and to the children, and teachers who survived this horrendous ordeal and their families as well. No one should ever have to experience the fear and horror that they were put through today. I can’t begin to imagine how terrifying it must have been for them. I will keep them in my prayers and hope that in time the mental and emotional trauma they experience as a result of today’s tragedy will pass and not scar their psyche too badly. I hope you keep them in your thoughts and prayers as well.
