This the end, beautiful friend the end, of our elaborate plan the end, of everything that stands the end… …… Jim Morrison / The Doors …………
Friday’s the big day! 12/21/12, the day some people believe the world will come to an end. Why? Because on Friday the Mayan Long Count Calendar will end and reset to zero indicating the end of But don’t be surprised if nothing cataclysmic happens and please don’t start celebrating either, because there’s a chance that the world has a couple of extra days and the end will come on Sunday instead. Yes, there are those who are saying that the Mayan Calendar has been misinterpreted and the calculated date is not correct. They claim the actual end date is this Sunday 12/23/12.
Since before the time of Christ there have been countless predictions about the End of Days. The End is usually predicted to to come in the form of some grand cataclysmic event. Earthquake, tsunami, tornadoes, hurricanes, famine, asteroids or meteors colliding with the Earth or some other horrific catastrophe. We’ve seen it played out time and time again in movies such as Armageddon, The Day after Tomorrow and 2012. To date, as we can all attest to, non of the countless predictions have come to pass. We’re still here, but what about next week?
According to some religious doomsday believers this coming Friday or possibly Sunday the world will end. Personally I don’t buy it, but many believers have already quit jobs, bailed on families and gave or signed away their possessions in preparation for the end that is to come. They believe we are on the final countdown and all the recent natural disasters and turbulent times are precursors to the end of days.
It’s not hard to understand why so many people believe that on a specific day in the near future the world will end? Belief in an apocalyptic end satisfies some of our basic human needs and gives purpose to our lives. For those who are religious, the image of Christ and a legion of His Angels descending to Earth from the heavens with the promise of a better world excites us and gives us hope. Hope springs eternal…
Like many of you I believe that the world will end one day. I’m am not foolish enough to think that this madhouse can go on forever. When I was a kid I use to think the world would end with Christ coming down from Heaven in a fiery, golden chariot drawn by two white, winged stallions, followed by an army of angels. And as He descended and hovers above us (about 500 ft in the air) , written in the sky Behind Him, against a backdrop of silvery clouds would be these two huge words, “THE END” with credits rolling behind them, just like a Hollywood movie! Hey, what did I know I was just a kid!
I have faith that Christ will return one day perhaps sooner than later, but let’s face it, no one really knows when the world will end. I doubt that it will be happening Friday or Sunday. Anyone who tries to predict the end is a damn fool. I don’t care how long and hard you study scripture, the Mayan Calendar, numerology or whatever, you will never accurately pinpoint an exact date or time. The Bible contains numerous references to the end of days and the one thing that is clear in many of those passages is that we best be ready because we don’t have a clue as to when it will happen. The best thing that you and I can do is be prepared!
“For you yourselves know full well that the end of days will come just like a thief in the night.” Thessalonians 5:4,9-10
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.” Matthew 24:36
