“Mana’o nani” Beautiful Maui Dreams

lahainaHave you ever been to Maui? If you’ve had the good fortune to have experienced this island paradise well lucky you! If you haven’t well stop wasting time and get there as soon as you possibly can! It’s an incredible place that should be experienced at least once in a lifetime. I’m one of the lucky ones, I’m here right now. I absolutely love it here. I’m not sure if I could actually live here on the island but believe me I’d be more than willing to give it the old college try!

Since my first visit to Maui back in 1998 I’ve suffered from a condition called “island fever” whose only symptom is a deep longing to return to the island. This is my fifth visit to Maui and if I have anything to say about it, it won’t be my last. Sadly I know that upon my return home to the mainland, as my current ten day “Maui fix” begins to fade, I will once again be struck with “island fever” and the intense yearning associated with it. As that familiar bumper sticker says “I’d rather be in Maui.”

So why Maui? what makes it so special? Well location is everything. The Hawaiian islands are among the most beautiful places on earth, boasting some the most incredible white, sandy beaches, lush green landscapes and weather that can only be described as incredible! I haven’t been to all the Hawaiian islands, only three, Maui, Oahu and Kauai. Although they share many of the same attributes, they each have their own distinct personality. As with people, Maui’s personality is open and inviting and offers visitors a truly magical experience. It has a rhythm all its own and once on the island you immediately find yourself caught up in its magical appeal and relaxing, easy going way of life.Yeah, Maui is really all about the lifestyle. You have to come take part in the Maui experience. I guarantee that once you do Maui, you too will catch “Maui fever.” All I can say is “Try it You’ll like it!”  It’s an incredible experience!

The last time I was on Maui back in July of 2007, I was moved to write the following song. It is based on my Maui experience and includes the titles of several painting by artist Michael Stark who, by a stroke of good fortune, we met in Lahaina on our second visit here in 2003.
