“Reckless” / “Leftover’s” A Hit or a Mess?

downloadSunday night, like millions of other viewers, I kicked back in my over-stuffed arm chair, turned down the lights, grabbed the remote, and prepared to watch a little TV. Although it was already after 10 pm I figured I was good for a couple of hours at least, plenty of time to watch a few recorded shows from my playlist and free up some much needed space on the hard drive. What the hell! I’ve got nowhere to be in the morning. Retirement does have its perks. Besides, summer is the season of the rerun the perfect time for a little catching up. At least it used to be.

Of course it’s no longer all reruns. Remember when the television season religiously began in September and ran for 24 episodes unless a program was cancelled of course. Today new and returning shows start anytime of the year, whenever the network sees fit. For instance the final season of ‘True Blood’ got under way a few weeks ago on HBO and last week Falling Skies began its new season on TNT. And last night CBS premiered a new series called “Reckless”, about lawyers in lust, while HBO premiered a new sci-fi/drama with religious overtones called “The Leftovers.”  In essence we have new programming  year round. I, of course, recorded both new shows for later viewing. Recording and watching a show when we damn well want to is awesome.  We are no longer slaves to a networks schedule! We are in control.

The first show I watched last nights was the series finale of ‘Californication’. A show that might better be titled “Hank Moody like to Drink, Drug and Fu#k!” but not necessarily in that order. David Duchovny is incredible!  I really enjoyed him in ‘X Files’ and I absolutely love the liberated Mulder he has become in ‘Californication.’ Sure the show is nasty, often tasteless and even degrading, but hey its still a great show. Much like my other Showtime favorite ‘Shameless.” What am I going to do without my weekly dose of Hank Moody? Guess I’m going to find out.

I then watched another of my Showtime favorites the season finale of “Nurse Junkie.” I mean “Nurse Jackie.” Not sure where this show is headed, but Jackie’s addiction is totally screwing up her life and the lives of her family. Jackie of course thinks she has things in control, typical of most junkies. At least she’s coming back next season to try and work through her addiction and other related problems. yeah right. I just don’t see redemption in Jackie’s future. She enjoys the buzz too damn much. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I was going to watch ‘True Blood ‘ next but instead decided to watch the new HBO drama “The Leftover’s” instead. You know I’m a sucker for a good tagline so with The Leftovers tagline of “We’re still here,” I had to check it out. Its been getting a lot of hype mostly positive. The Leftovers is a very strange tale about a community on the East Coast that are among those left behind following a so called global ‘rapture’ in which 2% of the world’s population vanished 3 years earlier. Even the passage of time hasn’t helped heal the emotional trauma and pain the event has triggered and the Leftovers are still reeling. They are desperate to come to terms with what happened and why, so they can get on with their lives. Interesting premise.

“The Leftovers” is brought to to us by the same guy who gave us the much talked about ABC series that no one ever truly understood ‘Lost.” Hopefully in this setting the story will be a little easier to follow. The pace of the season premiere was a bit slow for my liking, but interesting. It definitely has possibilities. I’ll continue watching if only to learn more about the group who call themselves the “guilty remnants.” You’ll have to tune in to find out who they are.

Next I made the colossal mistake of watching “Reckless” yet another lawyer series. What a waste of time. It’s a real piece of crap, a melodramatic nightmare! It is the polar opposite of the other lawyer drama on CBS, “The Good Wife.” Where “the Good Wife” is classy and tastefully done “Reckless” is crass and feels trashy. Why CBS put money into this dud is beyond me. This is one of those shows that just wasn’t good enough to make the Fall line up and its easy to see why. The network saves these gems for the slower summer season, throws them out there and hope they find an audience. Keep your fingers crossed CBS, you’ll need all the luck you can get with this loser. Yeah “Reckless” has all the makings of a cancelled series.

I knew early on that I was wasting my time, but I continued to watch anyway. I figured I’d give the show a chance and hoped that it might get better, it never did. The story line is cheesy and the acting is paper thin. But when one of the main characters, a lawyer no less, had no idea who “Perry Mason” was, I knew the show was lost. How can any credible lawyer not know about one of the greatest TV lawyers of all time?

This show simply tries too hard. At times its lighthearted and the flirting between the two lawyers is cute, but they have no real chemistry and a romance between them will probably develop but is highly unrealistic. At other times the story takes a serious turn and is dark and brooding. Move between these two dimensions is often clumsy and feels awkward. How can you move from light banter and casual flirtation to a dark scene of a group of police officers having sex with a drugged female officer on top of a police car, then back again. Its just not right.  My favorite quote of the night was when the local judge tells the DA that the defense attorney that “She’s got you bent over a stump with your pants down.” Classy right. I tell you this show is a mess. Yeah there’s not much substance here and this show won’t be around for long. I couldn’t erase this dog from my playlist fast enough. Unfortunately in my haste I accidentally erased “Unforgettable” along with it. My loss.

Just Saying…
