Throwback Thursday: Battle of the Bulge All’s Fair in Love, War and Weight Lose 2014

Got a weight problem? If so your not alone. Each and everyday the battle of the bulge rages on. Over two-thirds of adults in the U.S. are overweight and one third of them are obese! It the current weight trend continues nearly 44% of American adults will be considered obese by 2030! Nearly half of all Americans. Hard to believe when in 1990 the obesity rate was a mere 12%! And let’s not forget children and teens. Current figures show that one out of every three children is obese or overweight. And those figures are on the rise. Yes it appears that obesity and  being overweight are a national problem of grand proportion and growing.

Kind of hard to believe in a society that prides itself on thinness isn’t it? Everywhere you look TV, movies, billboards, advertisements, it’s about being thin, being fit. Everybody wants to look good. Check that, obviously not everyone. But even those who are obese or overweight dream of being thin. It’s the new American dream. Americans spend over 35 billion dollars a year on weight loss products and the majority of those Americans are still overweight. The only one who comes out in great shape is the diet and weight loss industry who are making more money than they know what to do with.

Americans are willing to do just about anything to lose weight. They spend their hard earned money on every type of exercise equipment, gimmicks and fad diets that come around.  There are so many diets out there it will make your head spin, the 3 Day diet, Cabbage Soup diet, Negative Calorie diet, Hollywood diet, Beverley Hills diet, Vinegar diet, Grapefruit diet, Tapeworm diet  and a host of others, the Atkins, South Beach, Low fat, Low Carb, 17 day, Blood Type, Zone and Detox diets.

Then there are a ton of weight loss procedures out there. There is the ever popular Lap Band, Gastric By-Pass, Gastric Sleeve, Fat Transfer, Laser Surgery and Liposuction. And yesterday I read about a new procedure called a Tongue Patch in which a piece of abrasive plastic a little bigger than a postage stamp is sewn onto the tongue which makes it too painful to eat! You wear the patch for up to a month and are primarily on an 800 calorie liquid diet. Supposedly a patient can lose up to 30 pounds in a month.  Ouch! Just the thought of a needle piecing my tongue again and again to sew on the patch is painful enough! But you can bet there are people out there desperate enough to get the tongue patch. Sick!

Losing weight isn’t easy but the long term solution can’t be found in fad diets and weight loss pills or medical procedures. The steps for losing weight are actually pretty simple, eat fewer calories and be more active. Unfortunately many Americans are looking for some quick fix way of losing weight instead of the tried and true method. Last year I managed to loss 20 pounds by cutting down on the portions I ate and riding my bicycle five times a week. It took me approximately five and a half months to do it. I suppose I could have done it faster, but hey I’m a beer drinker! I’ve even managed to keep most of the weight off. I’m a couple of pounds up at the moment. I’m still exercising and try to eat reasonably, and yes I’m still drinking beer. Of course I’ve got my magic aids that I learned about on Dr. Oz, Garcinia Cambogia and Raspberry Ketones for fat burning. I don’t know if they really help but what the hell. It’s not about how much weight you lose, it’s about feeling healthy.

Just a Thought…
